About Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana
Founded in 1985 as part of the Rural Landless Employment Guarantee Program (RLEGP), the Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) was established as part of the Rural Landless Employment Guarantee Program. In 1989, it became part of Jawahar Rozgar Yojana (JRY), but since January 1, 1996, it has continued to function independently of JRY. Since 1993-1994, the program has also been offered to non-SC/ST groups.
As of 1995, as long as they met the basic eligibility requirements, the program was expanded to include widows or next of kin of military personnel who died in action, as well as former service members and retired paramilitary forces who wish to live in rural areas. Because India has historically been a populous and poor country, the government has been focusing its welfare programs on providing adequate housing for refugees as well as rural dwellers since its independence. There have been numerous welfare programs in place since the 1950s, such as the House Sites and the Construction Assistance Scheme.
There was, however, a focused fund for the construction of housing for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and freed bonded labor only established in 1983 under the Rural Landless Employment Guarantee Program (RLEGP). As a consequence of this, IAY was formed in the 1985–86 fiscal year as a result of this.
